In this all day workshop you will utilize your creativity and imagination to fashion a rather odd art doll- a “Pod Head”, infusing the theme of Nature into your unique design. You will start by making a very simple torso from inexpensive, easy to obtain materials and use additional mixed-media goodies such as beeswax, paint, alcohol inks, rusted paper and more to create a surface design for your doll.

One of the techniques explored will be encaustic collage. This technique will be fundamental to your repertoire, as you can apply it to many surfaces including paper, cardboard, paper-mache, chipboard, wood, clayboard, and more.

In keeping with the nature theme, your doll will sport a seed pod, (included in your kit), for the most unusual of head-wear.

In the course of this workshop you will also fabricate a 3 dimensional head out of polymer clay and will be shown a simple way to make ears, and you will be able to apply the techniques learned to your future doll-making endeavors. For the face on your doll, you will choose from a variety of molds I will bring for class use. Tips on customizing the facial features will be discussed, so your Pod Head can be as individual as you are! Your finished doll will be approximately 10-12” tall on its stand.

Join me and see how creative you can be! (For your reading pleasure, my Pod Heads were featured in the Fall 2011 issue of Art Doll Quarterly.)

A clay oven is recommended for class.

Kit Fee: $25.00 payable in class.

This abstract doll is an example of how polymer clay and texture can combine to form a very remarkable partnership. In this all day workshop you will create a curious art doll out of polymer clay and other materials that offer plenty of opportunity for originality.

Simple geometric templates guide you when forming the pillow-shaped body for your doll, and magic happens when you use tools and other implements on the clay to make impressions and abstract patterns- go for a minimalist approach, or over the top… you choose! You may leave the body neutral (looks similar to bisque!), or apply color using supplies provided by the instructor.

The head will be fabricated using molds as a starting point to your most individual face! Various articles will be available for you to use to create a unique head-decoration that makes a statement. Metal stamps will also be available for stamping words or a short phrase into metal washers which can be used as neckwear, or as you wish. Your finished doll will measure approximately 12-16” on its stand. It is wire-supported and is designed to wobble and sway with just a touch!

Join us in this art doll adventure, surely to deliver an exciting end result!!
